The Engineering Process

The engineering process is official site a series of steps that engineers use to develop functional products and processes. It is an iterative method that can be used to create prototypes or improve existing solutions. It’s also a great method to develop problem-solving skills and to develop a mentality of „design under constraint”. The process of engineering design is a lot like the scientific method, however engineers employ creativity and design.

Identify the Problem

The first step is to identify the requirements needed to run a successful project. This involves a lot of brainstorming, and often requires the engineer to take into account constraints (e.g. materials, time, tools) when generating solutions. This requires an engineer also to evaluate the various options by identifying strengths and weaknesses and deciding on the most effective solution to achieve the goals of the project.

Generate Ideas

Engineers can use different approaches to solve problems ranging from brainstorming and discussion to 2D CAD modeling and animation. Examining and comparing the solutions to the specifications of the problem can help determine the best solution.

Once the final solution is selected, it’s now time to create the prototype. This can be as simple as drawing a sketch on paper or as a model that is constructed using the CAD software. Whatever the case, this step permits engineers to test the finished product and see whether it is able to meet the objectives he has set for it.
