Operating systems are the software that runs in the background of computers. They manage hardware components such as memory keyboards, file systems, keyboards monitors and printers. It also manages access to the central processing unit, or CPU.\n<\/p>\n

Multitasking is a term that allows multiple programs to run concurrently on an OS. This is because the OS allots system resources to programs, like CPU and memory space during execution. It monitors the amount of memory and CPU time the program uses and ensures that it doesn’t interfere with other programs using the same resources.\n<\/p>\n

Operating systems also track the file’s location and status on the computer’s hard drives. They create virtual directories and save metadata, including the date of creation or modification. An OS also makes it easier for an application to connect to the hardware of the computer through drivers. These drivers translate hardware’s proprietary language into a standard one that an operating system can be able to comprehend.\n<\/p>\n

When an application must save a file, it switches to the operating system kernel. This is because the application cannot directly connect to the disk drive and needs an interface driver to communicate with it.
